This Sunday we celebrate Mother's Day, and if any of you reading this didn't realize that the holiday was right around the corner, then let this serve as your reminder!
When my sister and I were young and Mother's Day would come around, we couldn't wait to bring our mom breakfast in bed to show her just how much we appreciated all she did for us. We had intended for her to be able to sleep in and then wake up to a delicious meal. It was a nice thought, but our execution wasn't quite so elegant. It typically included us banging around in the kitchen for an inordinate amount of time and then delivering some overcooked eggs with maybe some slightly burnt toast and a little fruit. It didn't dawn on me until I was a little older that there's no way anyone could've slept through all the noise we made, but it's the thought that counts, right? Anyway, every Mother's Day would start with the attempted breakfast and then the rest of the day was all about celebrating her; for the record, she is amazing.
Mother's Day celebrations have different meanings to different people. While the holiday provides special time to reconnect and reminisce, for many, the holiday takes an emotional toll all its own. No matter how you spend Mother's Day this year, may the occasion call to mind happy memories of the role models in your life.
To our mothers and other inspirations out there, happy Mother's Day! One day isn't nearly enough to celebrate all the incredible things that you do.
